"Magdalene's Mind"
- A Brief Synopsis |
“Magdalene’s Mind” is an original dramatic play that
revisits the historical character of Mary Magdalene.
She visits Sophia, Lydia, and George in their homes in New York City in
the present time.
Her encounters uncover key issues that dominate the behavior of the characters
she meets, while historical myths and legends of Mary Magdalene are explored
and questioned.
The play opens with Magdalene
awakening in Central Park. Alone, confused, and angry, she carries the
alabaster jar with her. Magdalene asks questions and exposes her feelings
to the audience – not quite sure who she is speaking to.
A unicorn observes from a distance.
Magdalene then visits Sophia, and a heightened and potentially violent
scene begins.
Sophia struggles to comprehend her intruder, while fearing for her life.
Sophia is confused but has no other choice but to accept Magdalene’s
presence when her family secret is revealed.
A unicorn observes from a distance.
Magdalene then visits Lydia. Lydia accepts Mary’s presence and is
delighted she has been chosen to spend
a “mental health day” with Magdalene. Her background as a
history teacher prompts her to ask Magdalene
all sorts of questions. But it Lydia’s heart that Magdalene finds
so touching, although Lydia has forgotten what her heart
even feels anymore.
A unicorn observes from a distance.
Magdalene then visits George, a cantankerous, frank older man who thinks
Magdalene has been sent by his brother
to fulfill his sexual needs. George is full of provocation and old-school
mentality. His perspective on life angers and
provokes Mary and she is surprised by the realization George unknowingly
leads her to.
A unicorn observes from a distance, this time changed by the experience.
The last and final scene occurs in Central Park. Magdalene hears the voice
of Jesus in the distance, approaching, getting closer and closer. Magdalene
begins to recite excerpts of The Song of Songs until she is joined with
Christ once again.
Christ responds in kind. They are thrilled to see each other again. In
this way. The two talk and they dance.
Mary anoints Jesus upon his instruction as they re-affirm an old and ancient
truth known to them in their physical day and time.
This is a scene that is difficult to describe but unforgettable once read.
